Summer is here and so is one of my favorite summer activities, the Summer Reading Program at my local libraries. Like the rest of us, summer reading programs have grown to include not only young children, but teenagers and adults. If you haven’t done so yet, stop by your local library (or libraries if like us you have both San Jose Public and Santa Clara County libraries nearby) and get started.
Don’t forget audio books. Especially during your summer travels. Books on CD and audio tape can be found at your local library in addition to Overdrive which is an e-book and audio book repository used by libraries throughout the county. Your local library card is all you need to check out this great free service. Audio books are anywhere from 30 minutes for young readers to twenty one hours for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Besides Overdrive, I recommend Amazon.com, Simply Audiobooks, and iTunes.
Libraries are not the only organizations promoting summer reading. Books can be earned at Barnes & Noble and Pizza Hut is sponsoring Brain Food Summer Reading Fun. Winning entries will receive Pizza Hut gift cards, books and the grand prize winner will receive an Nintendo DS Lite with Big Brain Academy game.
Remember the goal is to have your child read at least 5 books during the summer.
